Art & Life: A series of essays
Our brief was to conceptualize, design, and produce a 48-page book using essays by Josef Albers, Soetsu Yanagi, and Jonathan Safran Foer, + images of our choosing. The book I created is about the writing. It is not a showcase of flashy typography, image, or color. The essays themselves are so powerful that I felt it a disservice to the authors to design a book that put their text secondary; to put my form over their content.

I designed a simple, restrained system that highlights the intersections between the three seemingly-disparate texts. The essays are structured in a three-column grid, where each author's words appear in the same column across each spread so that they are paired in a relevant and meaningful way, and most importantly, encourage the viewer to read. Photographs by Abelardo Morell, Harry Callahan, and Algimantas Kezys are simple and beautiful instances of art in everyday life.
